The Power of Online Marketing

The web is a powerful medium for achieving marketing objectives.

It presents businesses and non-profit firms with an array of marketing opportunities that cannot be overlooked.

Methods of online marketing

  • A website alone does not generate leads or sales. Traditional marketing must complement online marketing. Standard marketing communications like brochures, signs, direct mail and other advertising will drive prospects to your website. These methods are complimentary and your website becomes part of an integrated campaign. Identify your web address on marketing materials and in advertising and state how it serves your audience.
  • Your website cannot exist in a vacuum. Get links established to your site from other websites. Ask affiliate organizations to place links on their sites to yours. You may want to link to affiliates as well. Reciprocal links will improve your search engine rankings. The more links to your website, the greater the chances that people will find you.
  • Improve your site's content to be focused and compelling. Pretty graphics will not attract users. Compelling useful content will. Offer industry advice and update your content regularly. Include testimonials and success stories that feature your clients. Publish your own articles that reflect your expertise. Cultivate your image. Offer the information that prospects and clients need in order to differentiate you from your competition.
  • Promote your business and website with online advertising like banner or skyscraper ads, similar to print methods. Repetition promotes brand and breeds familiarity. Review media kits and select websites where visitors match your customer profile. Use advertisers who will differentiate your ad in placement and who report back statistics on monthly clicks and other measurements.
  • Consider online newsletters that are emailed to subscribers. Newsletters can offer news and information on your products and services, articles or opinion pieces about your industry, and special deals that you can track for their success rate. Newsletters have grown in popularity because they are proven to be an effective marketing tool.

The majority of the U.S. population is now online. Internet sales in 2004 grew nearly 20% over the year before.* If your business is not taking advantage of the power of online marketing, you are missing major channels of opportunity to reach your market segment.

*A 2004 study by Shop.org/BizRate.com found 91% of merchants saw online growth this holiday season. 17% saw sales more than double over 2003. (From "Back to Email Basics" by Al DiGuido 2-10-2005, ClickZ Network.)
